VFAR Statement on the Death of Romanch Mahajan After Carriage Incident

Voters For Animal Rights is devastated by the tragic death of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan, who lost his life after a horse became spooked and collided with another carriage in Central Park on June 17, 2026. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, whose lives have been forever changed by this unimaginable loss. Our hearts are with them, his friends, and everyone who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

We are deeply grateful to Speaker Julie Menin for her leadership and compassion in scheduling a hearing on Ryder’s Law. This tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder that New York City must come together to find a path forward that protects public safety, prioritizes the welfare of horses, and supports the hardworking carriage drivers and their families.

Speaker Menin has always been someone who brings people together to solve difficult challenges, and we believe that if anyone can unite all stakeholders around a thoughtful and humane transition away from horse carriages — while ensuring drivers have access to new jobs and economic security — it is her. We look forward to working with Speaker Menin, the City Council, TWU, and all stakeholders to finally deliver a solution that moves our city forward.
